300 People Receive Food Vouchers

  • 17 photos for sale Buy a Photo
  • Over 300 needy in two low-income areas of San Bernardino received food vouchers for Thanksgiving November 19, 2012. Residents of Waterman Gardens and Maplewood Homes received $15 food vouchers totaling almost $5000 as part of a personal Thanksgiving gift from Art Davis. Davis, 71, of Walnut, finds satisfaction in giving back to the community where he was raised. "My mom and dad taught me right ethics, morals, and character," said Davis of his parents family tradition of giving to the needy. Along with his wife Freeda, Davis has been organizing some kind of charitable donation in town for the past 15 years. Fresh & Easy joined the effort by allowing people who redeem vouchers at their store and spend a total of $30 to receive a free turkey. Davis feels the Black community in San Bernardino has been most harmed by the bad economy, and thinks that it is going to get worse with government cut-backs. He seeks to empower Black leaders to join him in his effort to get members of their own community to help themselves and not rely necessarily rely on government. "Short-cuts don't work," said Davis. "Hard work works." GABRIEL LUIS ACOSTA/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER.
